Brazil visa for US citizens: the e-Visa, step by step

Brazil visa for US citizens: the e-Visa, step by step
The e-Visa is applied for online, on VFS Global, not at the consulate: it costs US$ 80.90 and takes about ten business days on average.

Since 10 April 2025, anyone traveling to Brazil on a United States passport needs a visitor visa, including for tourism and business.

You apply online, on the VFS Global platform, not at the consulate: the Consulate General in New York says it does not accept in-person tourism or business visa applications from these citizens.

The electronic visa costs US$ 80.90, allows multiple entries while it is valid and a stay of up to 90 days per year. According to the New York consulate's notice, average processing is about ten business days, and the consulate issues no emergency visas.

Who needs the e-Visa and who does not

The requirement applies to citizens of Australia, Canada and the United States entering Brazil on those countries' passports. The e-Visa exists only for those three nationalities, according to the San Francisco consulate's visa page.

A Brazilian who is also American is a different case. The Los Angeles consulate explains that a Brazilian cannot receive a Brazilian visa in a foreign passport, and that airlines check the visa at boarding.

The answer is to travel on a valid Brazilian passport. Chicago's passport page records a recent change: a dual national whose Brazilian passport has expired can now apply for a visa and travel on the foreign passport.

If in doubt, check with the consulate before buying the ticket.

What VFS asks for

San Francisco's list for tourism and business is short, and every item has to be right for the application to move.

Cannot get a visa in the US passport: travels on the Brazilian passport. Chicago records that a dual national whose Brazilian passport has expired can now apply for a visa.

Brazil e-Visa, step by step

Questions about the electronic visa go to VFS's own address, brazilevisa@vfsglobal.com, which the Embassy gives on its contact page. The consulates answer general visa questions at their own visa emails.

When the e-Visa is not enough

Anyone going to Brazil to work, study or live needs a temporary visa, a separate application. The company letter required for business trips, for instance, has to state that the traveler will provide no technical assistance and do no salaried work in Brazil: that is what the VITEM V temporary work visa is for.

And to stay longer than 90 days, the New York notice says to contact the Federal Police, once in Brazil.

According to San Francisco, since September 30, 2026 temporary visas for US, Canadian and Australian nationals are also processed electronically.

The consulate takes no tourist visa applications from US citizens: it is all on VFS.
