Brazilian passport in the US: renewal and first passport

Brazilian passport in the US: renewal and first passport
Since July 2026 the passport is printed in Brazil, by the Casa da Moeda: it is not issued on the day of the visit.

A Brazilian passport is requested at the consulate for your jurisdiction, always starting on e-Consular. The fee is US$ 60 for adults, US$ 40 from 4 to under 18 and US$ 20 under 4, the same in the Los Angeles, Miami and Washington fee tables.

The big change of 2026: according to the Los Angeles and New York consulates, since July 2026 passports requested at consulates in the United States are printed by the Casa da Moeda, in Brazil, and reach the consulate by diplomatic pouch. The passport is no longer issued on the day of the visit.

How long it takes now

Published times vary by consulate. Los Angeles estimates 60 business days by mail, counted from when the envelope arrives; San Francisco says about 65 calendar days in total, plus mailing time. New York and Chicago recommend applying at least six months ahead.

Printing at the consulate only happens in a proven consular emergency, and the New York and Los Angeles list is closed: death or hospitalization of a relative up to the third degree, a court order or police summons, and imminent deportation. A bought ticket, a paid hotel or a holiday do not count.

The documents

New York's adult list is the most complete, and the others follow the same lines. The first step is a form outside e-Consular: the MRE form, which produces the application receipt (RER).

Brazilian passport since July 2026

A detail that costs dearly: if you do not hand in your previous passport while it is still valid, the new one comes with 4 years of validity instead of 10, according to New York.

Minors and lost passports

For minors, Washington points out that the parents' authorization to issue the passport is a different document from the travel authorization. A lost, stolen or retained passport calls for the signed loss form.

And anyone without a CPF has to get one first: since January 2024 it is required for any consular service, according to New York.

Lost your passport and need to go back now

Miami advises reporting it to the police and starting a new passport request. If the trip to Brazil leaves no time, there is the Return Authorization (ARB), which lets you board and enter the country in place of the passport; in Miami, the request starts with an email to the passport section giving your travel date.

Without your previous passport while still valid, the new one comes with 4 years of validity instead of 10.
